A Zodiac boat passing blue icebergs on Jökulsárlón with the glacier beyond

Southeast Iceland · A route along the ice

Höfn, Iceland. Follow the glacier coast.

A harbour morning, a lagoon full of moving ice, a black beach facing the Atlantic. Use Höfn as your base for the glacier coast, then choose the boat or walk that fits your day. We separate the seasons, meeting points and real travel decisions before you book.

Independent editorial guide

Give this coast a day with room in it.

Höfn is more than a stop between long drives. Walk from the harbour towards Ósland, then decide which part of the glacier coast deserves your time. West along Route 1, Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach make a natural pair; Skaftafell is a separate outing farther on. Book one main activity, protect its check-in buffer and keep the shore stops flexible. Ice, weather and road conditions can change a plan. A good day leaves space for those changes instead of collecting rushed arrivals.

01 / Plan your trip

Three places. Three different kinds of time.

  1. Höfn

Walk the working harbour and the paths near Ósland. Check weather and road conditions before committing to the drive west.

  2. Jökulsárlón & Diamond Beach

Set the boat check-in first, then explore the shore and beach. Follow the pedestrian passage under the bridge.

  3. Skaftafell

Choose a guided glacier hike by time on ice and fitness. The departure base is separate from the lagoon.

HÖFN · ROAD 1

How much fits in a Höfn day?

Compare the road commitment before choosing an activity. Lagoon return distance is rounded from the published Höfn–Skaftafell and Skaftafell–lagoon corridor distances; it is not a live routing result.

Your planning allowance: 4.75 hours

Driving time and extra time are your assumptions. Enter the booked activity duration and check-in requirement; roads, weather and stops can add more. Do not plan an international flight or fixed ferry tightly against this estimate.
