A second lagoon, a different booking

Fjallsárlón boat tours & visiting guide [2026]

Fjallsárlón lies west of Jökulsárlón at the foot of Fjallsjökull. Its classic Zodiac tour is advertised as seventy-five minutes overall, including preparation, and its direct operator lists April–November subject to conditions. It is a separate lagoon and booking, not another boarding area for Jökulsárlón.

Updated

The short answer

Choose Fjallsárlón for its own boat format or coordinated boat-and-hike combination. Do not book it solely because a search labels every southeast lagoon trip “Jökulsárlón”.

Know which lagoon you are booking

The national park places Fjallsárlón ten kilometres from Jökulsárlón. It faces Fjallsjökull rather than Breiðamerkurjökull, so the backdrop and commercial reception are different. The operator estimates about ten minutes by road between the lagoons, before accounting for parking, walking and check-in.

There is no need to frame the choice as one good lagoon and one bad one. Both are natural places whose appearance changes with ice and weather. Choose according to the activity, your family’s eligibility and how it fits your route, rather than a promise that one will always be empty or always contain more ice.

Classic Zodiac: the details worth comparing

The direct operator’s checked classic boat page lists ISK 11,300, approximately 75 minutes overall, a maximum of 12 people per boat and a minimum age of five. Its FAQ describes roughly 45 minutes on water within the total time. The ticket includes an English-speaking guide, warm flotation jacket and life vest.

A roughly ten-minute gravel walk leads from reception to the boat area. That is a useful detail if someone has difficulty walking: an easy boat label does not remove the approach. Ask the operator about boarding and assistance before paying rather than treating the shoreline as evidence of accessible boat access.

A combined boat and glacier activity

The verified GetYourGuide Fjallsárlón combination was from € 210 for four hours when checked. It combines a Zodiac crossing with a guided glacier hike, with up to ten guests and a minimum age of fourteen. Glacier equipment and flotation clothing are included; you still need suitable personal clothing and boots.

The direct operator describes a summer-led June–September window for this combination. Confirm the actual calendar. It is not the same product as the classic family boat outing, and a child meeting the five-year boat minimum does not thereby qualify for the hike.

Reception, parking and the changing seasons

The operator gives its reception behind FROST restaurant as the base. Its location page distinguishes summer check-in at the reception building from winter check-in at the restaurant. Published summer boat check-in is fifteen minutes before departure; the winter guidance asks twenty minutes. Follow the voucher for the actual product and date.

Free parking is advertised for the operator’s guests. Do not add Jökulsárlón’s national park parking charge automatically to this private-base booking. Conversely, visiting the other lagoon later may require its own area payment. Keep access costs attached to the correct place.

Walking between lagoons is a hike

The park’s Breiðármörk route links Fjallsárlón and Jökulsárlón across fifteen kilometres and is described as challenging, taking four to five hours. That is not a short footpath substitute for the road drive. It also creates a transport problem if your car remains at the other end.

Ask rangers about current conditions and arrange the return before setting out. If you have a booked boat departure, do not use a long walk as an optimistic last-minute approach. Wind, terrain and stops can consume the margin. A local shoreline visit is a simpler addition around a timed activity.

A sensible visit from Höfn

The operator’s rough Höfn driving estimate is one hour, which should be treated as orientation rather than a reliable deadline. Check current roads and leave a check-in buffer. If you plan both lagoons, choose one timed activity and leave the other shore visit flexible.

Carry warm layers, waterproof outerwear and snacks. Photograph from safe ground and follow the skipper’s instructions near ice. Icebergs can roll, so neither a close view nor wildlife should be demanded as a guaranteed component.
