On the lagoon
Jökulsárlón boat tours: Zodiac or amphibian?
Both boats sail among Jökulsárlón’s icebergs. The useful decision is how much of your day and budget you want to give the lagoon, who is travelling with you, and whether the departure works with your route along the south coast.
Updated
The short answer
Choose the amphibian for a shorter introduction and younger children. Choose the Zodiac for a longer outing over more of the lagoon, provided everyone meets the booking conditions.
What you get on each boat
The amphibian is a vehicle that travels from land into the lagoon. Its shorter excursion suits a first encounter with the ice, especially when a glacier hike is already the main activity of the day. A guide explains the lagoon in English; other languages are subject to availability.
The Zodiac is a smaller inflatable boat. It can travel farther around the lagoon, with the route and approach to the glacier controlled by the skipper. Neither a glacier-front approach nor a particular iceberg is guaranteed.
| Decision | Amphibian | Zodiac |
|---|---|---|
| Published duration | 30–40 minutes | About 1 hour 15 minutes |
| Usual product-page season | May–November, conditions permitting | May–October, conditions permitting |
| 2026 direct adult tariff | ISK 7,100 | ISK 16,600 |
| Best fit | Short visit; families | More time exploring the lagoon |
| Equipment | Life jacket | Flotation suit and life jacket |
Read the season as a window
The operator’s pages are not perfectly consistent: the amphibian page says May–November, while its general FAQ describes early May–October. November is therefore a possibility to verify in the live calendar, not a reliable assumption. Zodiac departures are normally advertised May–October.
A reservation does not override unsafe weather or ice. Leave room for a change of plan and read the cancellation conditions on the listing you actually book; direct-operator terms and marketplace terms may differ.
The prices need a label
The figures above are the operator’s published adult prices for 2026, in Icelandic krónur, checked on 20 October. They are useful for comparing formats. They are not GetYourGuide quotes, and they do not include a promise about a future date.
Compare your final basket with the party’s ages, booking fees, cancellation terms and included transport. Do not confuse a long Reykjavík coach excursion with a boat-only ticket that requires you to arrive at the lagoon.
Arrive at the lagoon, not at your hotel
Most on-location boat bookings require independent arrival at Jökulsárlón. Staying in Höfn does not establish that pickup is included. Use the meeting pin on the voucher, allow time to park and walk, and carry the booking confirmation.
Zodiac check-in is 30 minutes before departure. Treat that as the time to be checked in, with parking and payment already handled. Warm layers, hat, gloves and weatherproof clothing remain sensible in summer.
Pair the cruise with the shore
Make the boat the fixed point in the day and leave the lagoon viewpoints and Diamond Beach flexible. Those stops are worth time of their own, especially if the tide has left ice on the black sand.
At the beach, stay back from waves and never climb ice. Use the pedestrian route under the bridge, following current signs. Check the road map and weather warning before leaving your accommodation, not only when you make the booking.
Know what the booking link offers
GetYourGuide’s Jökulsárlón selection includes ice-cave trips, glacier activities and excursions from Reykjavík. At our check, its boat category mainly showed coach and private combinations; a standalone local Zodiac or amphibian ticket was not verified there. Read each listing’s departure point and inclusions. The direct operator pages below remain the source for the boat comparison.
