Two lagoons, two different visits
Jökulsárlón vs Fjallsárlón: choose a lagoon and boat trip
Jökulsárlón and Fjallsárlón are neighbouring glacier lagoons, but a booking for one does not put you on the other. Choose the landscape and boat format that suit your group, then leave time for the shore. Seeing both is possible without buying two boat trips.

The short answer
Choose Jökulsárlón for its lagoon-to-sea setting and a separate Diamond Beach visit. Choose Fjallsárlón for a glacier-front landscape and its own boat departure. For many first visits, one booked boat and flexible shore time at the other is enough.

Two lagoons and a separate coastal stop
Location overview only. Pins identify places, not hotel entrances, boat check-in desks or a hiking route. Confirm the exact meeting point and use current signed access.
Number labels are offset where needed; fine lines connect them to the actual point.
Fjallsárlón
Jökulsárlón lies beside Route 1, with the outflow and Fellsfjara beaches on the seaward side. Fjallsárlón is farther west, below Fjallsjökull. These are distinct parking areas, shore paths and tour receptions. The national park describes Fjallsárlón as about 10 km west of Jökulsárlón; allow for their approach roads and your actual parking location.

Fellsfjara / Diamond Beach
For Jökulsárlón, arrive with the booking’s required reporting margin, establish the parking and reception location, then use unbooked time for the visitor path. Diamond Beach is an additional stop across Route 1, with its own walking and wave-exposure considerations. It is not a guaranteed display of ice of a particular size.

The difference that matters on the ground

These are distinct parking areas, shore paths and tour receptions. Do not interpret this as a ten-minute connection between boat check-ins. You must finish the first activity, return to the vehicle, drive, park and reach the second reception. A relaxed shore visit is easier to adapt than a second fixed booking.
| Priority | Start by comparing | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lagoon, river and black-sand beach | Jökulsárlón | The outflow connects the lagoon with the sea |
| Glacier-front landscape | Fjallsárlón | A distinct basin beneath Fjallsjökull |
| An amphibian boat | Jökulsárlón | Check the precise product and season |
| Both landscapes with less scheduling | One boat plus two shore visits | Avoid back-to-back check-in deadlines |
Choose a boat format, not just a lagoon name
At Jökulsárlón, the amphibian product currently describes 30–40 minutes on the excursion and a May–November season, with published operating hours through 15 November. Its calendar controls actual availability. Zodiac options are separate products with their own terms, so a price or age rule from one cannot be transferred to the other.
The Fjallsárlón iceberg-boat product currently describes around 75 minutes in total, including an approximately ten-minute gravel walk to the docking area. It lists April–November and a minimum age of five. These details belong to that specific product, not every activity at the lagoon. Recheck them for your date and group.
How to visit one lagoon without rushing
For Jökulsárlón, arrive with the booking’s required reporting margin, establish the parking and reception location, then use unbooked time for the visitor path. Diamond Beach is an additional stop across Route 1, with its own walking and wave-exposure considerations. It is not a guaranteed display of ice of a particular size.
For Fjallsárlón, begin at the reception if you have a tour. Keep the walk to boarding separate from an independent shore walk. Ask about boarding, uneven ground and any need for assistance before payment; a short advertised walk is not evidence of step-free access.
A practical order when visiting both
Travelling east from Skaftafell, Fjallsárlón comes before Jökulsárlón. Travelling west from Höfn, reverse the order. Choose one timed activity and make the other lagoon a flexible stop, so a delayed drive or longer shore visit does not threaten another booking.
The park’s B4 Fjallsárlón circular route is listed as 1.5 km, about 45 minutes and challenging. Use that classification rather than assuming a lagoon walk is easy because it looks short. Ice, wind and route changes may make a shorter visit more appropriate. Follow signs and ranger advice on the day.
The walking connection is a separate hike
The park’s B3 Breiðármörk route between the lagoons is 15 km and estimated at four to five hours, with a challenging rating. It is not a casual walking transfer between two car parks. Decide on transport at the far end before starting a one-way hike.
A visitor hoping to see both lagoons briefly should compare driving between them rather than adding this hike by accident. Do not walk onto glacier ice or floating icebergs. Shore sightseeing, guided boating and glacier travel are different activities with different preparation.
Parking, weather and seasonal differences
Check the current national-park regional-fee information and parking signs at Jökulsárlón. Do not assume that paying one operator for a boat includes parking or that a national-park discount applies at every privately managed destination. Keep a record of what you paid and the vehicle registration used.
The park describes the region as accessible year-round, but seasonal tourism services vary. A winter shore visit does not imply that a boat operates. Older regional summaries can show a narrower boat season than current product pages; use the exact departure calendar and the crew’s operating decision. Check road and weather information independently.
Compare the complete cost and the next overnight
Compare the total for your actual adults and children, equipment, walking requirements, language and refund terms. Ask what happens if the boat is cancelled and whether another part of a combined activity still runs. A lower headline price may describe a different duration or format.
If you are continuing to Höfn, decide whether you want to arrive before dinner rather than filling every daylight hour. If you stay around Hali or the lagoons, verify the accommodation entrance and meal arrangements. The best choice is the one that leaves a workable route, not the greatest number of boat tickets.
Fjallsárlón is a separate lagoon beneath Fjallsjökull.
